About Irwin District Museum

Book Direct with the Owner at Irwin District Museum with QLD Tourism in Dongara Click on the Email or Call Now button to get your special price.

The Irwin District Museum in Dongara is housed in one of the oldest police stations in Western Australia. A working station until 1984, it then underwent extensive restoration to bring the station, courthouse and gaol back to its prime. It is now a museum with a range of displays reminiscent of the district?s interesting history. Take a walk through the 1870s building and picture what it would have been like to be on the other side of the law in the 1800s. Take a look through the gaol cells and courthouse. See the living quarters of the resident policemen and their families. The museum also contains collections covering the early settlement in the area, including many antiques and heirlooms from the locals, and a display about the shipwrecks along the Irwin Coast. The museum is in Dongara, four hours north of Perth and just south of Geraldton. Famous for its Cray fishing industry, whilst in Dongara make sure you visit the live lobster facility at the marina, which can hold up to 35,000 live lobsters. If visiting in August or September make sure you take your camera as the wildflowers are spectacular throughout the region....

Hi, Firstly I would like to thank Shirley Scooter for all the help she gave to me a few months ago. I went into the museum and asked about some relatives around the area and she took me out the back to look at her computer and look up the Carnamah website and found more information about my ancestors in that area. A few days later a man came into the museum asking the same thing and it turned out we are related to the same Great Grandma Annie Morgan, Richmond ( nee Little). From that came two more family members and we are now all sharing our family history and keeping in contact. It is thanks to the volunteers around these places that help people solve their family mysteries and a wonderful discovery it has been by all of us. Thank you for allowing me to have a say about Shirley and I only wish the best for her and your lovely museum and township. Colleen Faed, Mandurah, Western Australia.

Good displays of local history and the story of the rabbit invasion of Australia.
