Set on sprawling lawns at the base of Mount Ainslie, directly north of Canberra's Old and New Parliament Houses, the Australian War Memorial is a peaceful and picturesque site. There are bronze plaques lining walking paths, sculptures in the garden (including of WWI hero, Simpson and his donkey), a shrine and museum and cafe among other things to explore. Give yourself a few hours to wander through, read moving and fascinating war stories, learn about battles and machinery and just take it all in.
